Transylvania
[English], Erdely [wooded land in Hungarian], Siebenbuergen [German],
terra ultrasilvana, "the land beyond the forest" [Latin], Ardeal
[Romanian], Erdel [Turkish]) is a basin in the central part of today's
Romania. It is a name that became popular during the Middle Ages
to designate the easternmost province of the Hungarian Kingdom.
It is inhabited by romanians, hungarians, germans (saxons), gypsies,
few turks and bulgars.

When
Americans hear about Transylvania, they think of vampires, cemeteries,
a mysterious fog-covered countryside, and people terrorized by Count
Dracula. Bram Stoker and Hollywood have succeeded in relegating
a real place, with real people into a storybook creation, a never-never
land for movies and television.
