If you find that an image is not aligning properly in WordPress, the problem may stem from your active theme. Fixing image align glitches may be done by patching the style sheet. Learn how to fix it.

Recently one of my clients WordPress accounts incurred a glitch in aligning the image. Regardless of how my client configured each image using the WordPress control panel, and in spite of trying to patch the images with CSS, the images simply would not align properly. This was a problem.

The host provider at West Host took the time to login and test the application. Sure enough, they agreed with me that the images would not properly align, as instructed, by the application control panel.

The administrator suggested that this bug may stem from the theme being used and that it was not the WordPress software that was in error. Westhost’s hypothesis was a correct one.

I cross compared the source code of the page that was having issues with both the theme my client used and the default theme that comes with WordPress. What I discovered is that WordPress uses its own set of custom classes in order to align images. By default, WordPress expects to find the CSS classes “img.centered”, “img.alignright”, “img.alignleft”, “.alignright” “.alignleft” in every theme’s style sheet. If you use the WordPress software to configure alignment you may see any of the above classes assigned to the image in the source code.

HOWEVER…If you have an active theme installed that does not have these classes written into style.css, you too may incur a problem with your layout.

Note: the default template for WordPress; “WordPress Default 1.6” by Michael Heilemann, includes the file RTL Stylesheet (rtl.css). If you find that you are incurring a layout problem, you may wish to cut and paste specific code from rtl.css to your active theme’s style.css theme to insure that the missing CSS code is included without adversely affecting your active theme’s css.

NOTE: be sure not to overwrite code in your active theme’s css file with the default code as your theme developer may have intentionally developed css classes based on the default classes of the same name. Also, it is good practice to make a back up file of your active css theme before manipulating the stylesheet code. That’s just smart practice

Website advice from Creative Developments, a website design company in Scottsdale, Arizona. Do NOT host a WordPress web site account on a GoDaddy server. They provide no dashboard tech support. Review

Readers, take it from me, do not turn to GoDaddy as your server provider if you intend to host a website developed using WordPress. You will not be pleased with their level of tech support if anything goes wrong with your software.

What a series of awful experiences Creative Developments has had while managing our client accounts with GoDaddy when it comes to the WordPress application. I’m not asking for much. If I host my website on an account called the WordPress hosting account I expect at least a base level of tech support specifically tailored for WordPress.

If GoDaddy installs the WordPress software on their server on a hosting package specifically tailored to WordPress and the application incurs a glitch…investigate it and resolve it. I’m not being unreasonable here in this expectation. If something goes awry with the WordPress software you’d expect the technical support team to at the very least login to your account and review the problem at hand. Nothing doing at GoDaddy!

At the time of this blog entry, the policy at GoDaddy is that the technical support staff at GoDaddy will not access your WordPress account even with your permission. They will not login to the wp-admin panel under any circumstance which makes it impossible to address any issue that requires admin access in order to see, address and resolve the issue at hand.

Example: on one of my client accounts if I add an image to any page or post and then publish that page or post, the image posts skewed. If I post the image and that image is 100×120 pixels, upon posting the height displays as far more than 120 pixels. This is a legitimate glitch in the software that THEY installed and host. I shouldn’t have to tell the client to patch every image with CSS. I expect the GoDaddy tech support rep. to login to the panel, investigate the issue and address it. That should be standard practice. But this request apparently does not fit within GoDaddy’s protocol.

Now I understand the need for account security but this is asinine. If I provide GoDaddy with my customer number and my call pin verifying that I am the owner of this account and I personally give them the login credentials to the dashboard of WordPress, where’s the security risk of them logging in? You have my permission! The only problem is in GoDaddy’s reps. refusal to login and address the problem at hand. (Can I swear now? It’s so frustrating).

Note: this is not a problem with other server providers. Westhost and Hosting.com will both provide wp-admin, dashboard technical support for your WordPress software. They won’t refuse your request to investigate and address the issues at hand. Even if it’s not generally an issue that they are obligated to address, they will often oblige you. With GoDaddy? Good luck. They claim to not even have level two tech support teams (untrue, I have spoken to them in the past after great effort to be transferred to them).

Do I sound upset while writing this? You bet. I’ve had it! GoDaddy may be a great place to purchase your domain name, they offer far better deals than Network Solutions, but this is just an unreasonable stance taken by GoDaddy, especially when my clients are hosting on what GoDaddy sells as WordPress hosting accounts. Resolve the application breaks on your server or don’t host the application all. I take my client’s tech support needs seriously. They are your clients too, so why don’t you treat them with the same respect I do? You’re not a monopoly, GoDaddy. Stop acting like one.

SEO TIPS: Learn how to write blog articles with the intent of developing relevant landing pages to your website. A business should blog with the purpose of forwarding an internet marketing campaign.

I have a video production client who blogs. They are well written and informative but I couldn’t help wondering “why” she chose to blog on certain topics that were not relevant to the services that she provided.

For example one blog has a focus on Episodic or Reality Television. The client should answer the question are you trying to be found for the words “Episodic or Reality Television”? Is this topic relevant to the services that you offer? If not, why write on the subject at all? Unless this client offers services in episodic series or works in television, this is a non-productive blog article when it comes to developing keywords and phrases that lead visitors to this site looking for specific services offered by this business.

Blogging Exercise:

Follow this exercise: list 20 keyword phrases that you’d like to be found under, phrases you’d type into a Google search box to be found under and then write a blog article about each phrase in separate articles. If you follow this exercise you will soon find yourself blogging with purpose.

Summary:

This client is underutilizing her blog by not blogging with the intent of developing a relevant landing page to her site. A business should blog with the purpose of forwarding an internet marketing campaign.

Don’t expect to be hired as a video production specialist or an Avid Media composer editor with a by blogging on “Episodic or Reality Television”. It may make for a fun read but it does not forward your internet marketing campaign.

Write blogs articles that are relevant to your business. Blog with purpose.

Recently I had a client write to me the following in regards to her new blog: “Spoke with my blog writer and everything on the blog is as optimized as it can get according to her. So we should be set.”

I took one look at her new blog and knew, that, although her blog had title text, keywords and description text and that they passed an SEO analysis test, the blog article was still far from optimized; only she didn’t know it and didn’t understand why.

This was the title text to her blog:

Episodic or Reality Television | Tri-Toy.com Blog

Under the strictest sense of SEO analytics, it passes, but this blog’s title text was 49 characters that wouldn’t mean anything to anyone searching for her video production company services without looking under the company name.

Note: When you blog it should blog with purpose, it should be with intent. A blog article is an internet marketing tool when utilized right. Each article has the potential to act as a landing page to your website. This opportunity is lost when your title text and blog content is not relevant to what you do and how you’d like to be found on search engines.

Your title text is essential to being found on search engines. In today’s search engines, preference is given to the title text when your web page is indexed. Title text is 70-80 characters of valuable real-estate that should be written with search specific keywords and phrases that enable your page to be found on search engine result pages (SERP). It is a waste to misuse and underutilize this space.

Note: it is a common mistake to misuse this valuable space with your own company name on every blog article. It is not necessary. If you want to be found by users specifically looking for you and/or your business by name, register on local business directories. If you register your company name on Google Pages, Yahoo Local Business, Super Media, Yelp, and other local business directories and you will be found specifically for your company name in a specific geographic region.

Try it out for yourself: type in “Creative Developments in Tempe, AZ” in a search engine. See? The registered company name was found. Leave the business name searches to the local business listing results. Your blog article’s title text is too valuable to fill with your company name on every blog. Again, it’s a misuse of the title text space to repeat your own name on each of your blogs if you’ve already registered your business on local business directories.

Let’s example our example title text further. This client is wasting 16 characters on the non-search specific words: Tri-Toy.com Blog. Why is this? Well, ask yourself who is searching for Tri-toy by typing in the word “Blog”? It is true that this page is a blog, but few, if any, are searching for this blog under the keyword, blog.

Would you like to accelerate a presence on Google’s search engine results page (SERP) without having to resort to pay-per-click (PPC) marketing? You can. One secret lies in the implementation of a YouTube video campaign

Why YouTube? Because Google owns YouTube videos that have been “tagged” with specific keywords and phrases propagate very fast in Google’s search engine. These videos in turn are adopted by other websites such as AOL video.
